You need to be tall.
I loved this coat. It was warm and stylish and I got lots of compliments . . . . but I'm only 5ft 2 and it nearly touched the ground. If you want it to hit mid calf I think you would need to be about 5ft 10. The coat is also quite big so you might want to size down.
